Architecture of a modern online casino

A behind-the-scenes look at how online casino platforms are built: from game provider integration to bonus systems and compliance.

The Hidden Complexity of Online Casinos

When a user enters an online casino, they see a simple interface: games, balance, deposits. But behind it lies an incredibly complex architecture handling millions of transactions, regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions, and real-time fraud prevention.

After working at Gamanza Group and Stratech Corp, I want to share some insights on how these platforms are built.

Main Components

1. Game Aggregator

Modern casinos don't develop their own games. They integrate catalogs from multiple providers like Pragmatic Play, Evolution Gaming, NetEnt, and Microgaming, among others.

Each provider has its own API, data formats, and requirements. The aggregator's role is to unify all of this into a consistent interface for the casino. This includes:

  • Launching games within the platform
  • Synchronizing user balance with each provider
  • Processing bet and win transactions in real-time

The complexity lies in keeping everything synchronized and handling edge cases when a provider fails or responds slowly.

2. Wallet Engine

The wallet engine handles all financial operations:

  • Deposits (cards, crypto, transfers)
  • Withdrawals with verification
  • Bonuses and wagering restrictions
  • Multi-currency

The challenge here is consistency. There can never be a discrepancy between the displayed balance and the actual one. A penny difference can mean thousands of dollars in losses when you scale to millions of users.

3. Bonus System

Bonuses are the main acquisition and retention tool. A typical bonus system includes:

TypeDescriptionComplexity
WelcomeFirst deposit bonusMedium
ReloadSubsequent deposit bonusMedium
CashbackLoss returnsHigh
Free SpinsFree slot spinsHigh
VIPLoyalty programsVery high

Each bonus has wagering rules (how much the user must bet before withdrawing), allowed games, maximum bet limits, and expiration dates. The business logic behind this is surprisingly complex.

Compliance and Regulation

Each jurisdiction has different requirements, and this directly affects the architecture:

Switzerland (Jackpots.ch)

  • Strict geo-blocking: only verified users in Switzerland can play
  • Identity verification before first deposit
  • Mandatory deposit limits by law

Latin America (Juegalo)

  • Constantly evolving regulations
  • Integrations with local payment providers (each country has its own methods)
  • Mandatory Spanish support

The system must be flexible enough to adapt to these differences without requiring massive code changes.

Main Lesson

Online casino technology is years ahead of many industries in:

  • Real-time personalization
  • Fraud prevention
  • Engagement systems and retention

If you come from another sector, there's a lot to learn from iGaming about how to build platforms that retain users and scale to millions of transactions.

The experience in this industry taught me to think about edge cases, data consistency, and user experience at a level I hadn't seen in other sectors.
